A North Cork man who told investigating detectives that he had €16,000 worth of drugs to offer as bribes to gardai has been given an 18 month suspended prison sentence after spending a month in jail.

Kieran Murphy (42) of Ashgrove, Cross of the Groves, Clonlough, Mitchelstown pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in June to possessing 11 bars of cannabis resin for sale or supply at his home on October 15, 2010.

During the June hearing, Det Garda Fitzgerald told the court that gardai found the 11 bars of cannabis resinin a panel under the stairs during a planned search of the house when a garda sniffer drugs detected the stash.

Murphy initially told gardai that he had found the drugs inside a gate in a field and that he had kept them to give to gardai if he was caught speeding - a tale that did not amuse Judge Sean O'Donnabhain.

Defence barrister Donal O'Sullivan said that Murphy was something of a Walter Mitty character.
