Thousands pay respects to late wife of former TD Ned O'Keeffe
Tributes have been paid to Anna O'Keeffe, the wife of former food minister Ned O'Keeffe, who passed away last Sunday at the Marymount Hospice following a long illness.
Mrs O'Keeffe (née Buckley) is survived by her husband Ned (74), their three sons Cork East TD Kevin, Pat and Ciaran and daughters Lorraine and Cork County Councillor Deirdre (O'Brien).
Thousands of people queued, many for up to two hours, on Tuesday evening to pay their respects to the extended O'Keeffe family ahead of Mrs O'Keeffe's removal from the family home at Ballylough, Mitchelstown to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballindangan.
Among the large crowd were Fianna Fail TD Billy Kelleher, former Justice Minister Gerry Collins, former Cork East TD's Michael Ahern and Tom Barry, Mitchelstown-born Circuit Court judge Brian O'Callaghan and Cork County chief executive Tim Lucey.
It is understood that Fianna Fail party leader Micheál Martin also called to sympathise with the family on Monday evening.
Tributes to the late Mrs O'Keeffe were also paid by Fianna Fail Cumann across Cork East, by the party at national level and by other political parties.
Speaking on Monday evening Mr O'Keeffe said that while his family were heartbroken at the loss of his wife, they were also grateful to have had such "an incredible wife, mother and friend."
Mrs O'Keeffe was laid to rest on Wednesday at St Dominic's Cemetery, Glanworth following Requiem Mass.
