A WOMAN caught travelling at an "alarming" speed has been given a fine and penalty points "to slow her down."
Rosarie Dineen of 5 Bruach an tSulain, Ballymakeera was detected travelling at 149 kmph in a 100 kmph zone along the N22 Cork-Killarney road at Inchirahilly.
Ms Dineen said that she lives in Ballymakeera with her three children and did not know of the offence until gardai called to her with a summons to appear in court.
She said she was driving her Audi A4 when the road was quiet and was unaware of the speed she was travelling at.
Judge James McNulty described the offence as "disturbing" given the speed involved and fined her €300, imposing penalty points on her license in the process.
The defence solicitor, Margaret Sheehan, asked that the Judge reconsider the penalty, but he declined the request. "The speed is alarming, and these penalty points might slow her down," he said.
