A NEWLYWED Kerryman received a belated wedding present from the most unlikely of sources - a Cork Judge.

James Healy, of Tragalee, Tuosist, Killarney appeared in Macroom District Court last week charged with not paying a fine for a speeding offence recorded by speed detection van on the N22 at Inchirahilly Crookstown on May 9 last.

Judge James McNulty noted that Mr Healy had missed a prior court appearance for the offence, to which the defendant explained that he was on his honeymoon at the time. He apologised for missing the deadline for paying the fine.

"Well I daresay you didn't have the right balance of mind at the time, you were pre-occupied with other things. I'll give you a wedding present and spare you the conviction," Judge McNulty said.

Judge McNulty struck out the charge on condition that Mr Healy pay €100 to the court charity box.
