A FORMER Garda who was shot dead in his home last week was due to stand trial for handling machinery stolen from a Mallow business.
The body of John Kerins was found in the living room of his Cavan home last Friday. He was shot twice in the head.
It has since emerged that the 49-year-old separated father of three was arrested last April on the South Ring Road in Cork City after the van in which he was travelling was stopped by gardaí.
He was charged with two counts of handling stolen property when plant machinery stolen from a tool hire business in Mallow on the same date was allegedly found in the van.
The former detective had pleaded not guilty to both the charges of handling stolen property and was due to go on trial at Cork Circuit Court on February 5.
Gardai believe that Mr Kerins knew his killer and may have let him into his home, as there was no sign of forced entry at his house. His body was discovered at 11am last Friday by a family member.
Mr Kerins had been on sick leave from the Gardai from 2005, and was discharged from the force on medical grounds in 2009.
