CORK North West TD Michael Moynihan has called for an extension to the February 1 deadline for registration of septic tanks - saying there is still a huge amount of confusion surrounding the registration process.
Deputy Moynihan says Environment Minister Phil Hogan has imposed the new laws without addressing the concerns of septic tank owners in Cork, including information on the grant aid available, and the inspection standards that will apply.
"Having spoken to septic tank owners locally over the past number of months there is still confusion about what this legislation means for them," Deputy Moynihan said. "It is clear that the Government has rammed through this legislation without informing the public of its implications or the new standards that must be met.
"It is completely unfair of the minister to force the hand of septic tank owners in this way.
"While it is welcome that the government caved into pressure from Fianna Fáil and interest groups on making grant aid available, it is disappointing that the Minister insisted on capping this at €4,000 considering that some septic tank upgrades may involve much higher costs," Deputy Moynihan added.
