DAVIS College Mallow was the venue last Monday for the official launch of Scifest 2013 by Innovation minister Sean Sherlock.
Scifest is a national competition for secondary schools focused on innovation and enquiry into scientific research and is supported by institutes of technology nationwide, the Science Foundation of Ireland, Discover Science and Engineering and a number of private industries, including Intel.
The Mallow launch marked the first occasion that the project was launched in a school and the first time that the launch took place outside Dublin.
Responding to words of welcome from Davis College deputy principal Gerard O'Sullivan, Ms Sheila Porter, chief organiser of the project, said that she was very pleased that the event was taking place in Davis College, and that the decision to locate the launch there was due to the college's positive reputation.
In 2012, almost 3,400 students from 227 schools exhibited at SciFest.
