'Repeal the 8th' rally in Cork

On Saturday June 17, the Cork Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution are running an event to coincide with a national day of action.

The march is planned to start at 1.30pm on Grand Parade, assembling in front of Cork City Library and taking a route around the city before reassembling at Grand Parade where there will be guest speakers on the theme of 'After the Citizens' Assembly - Abortion Rights Now'.

The recently formed Cork Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment is part of a national umbrella organisation - The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment. The Cork group is made up of activist organisations, civic groups, trade unions and political parties from Cork.

Sandra McAvoy from Rebels for Choice said: "We are a group that is made up of people from all walks of life and we have come together as we are all concerned about this issue. "The reason why we are having this event is because the Citizens' Assembly took the time to understand the ethical medical and legal issues raised by the Eighth Amendment in a way the majority of our politicians have never done. Its members said loudly and clearly that we can trust our mothers', sisters' and daughters' decisions - whether they make them for medical reasons or have other reasons for not continuing a pregnancy."
