Principal Catherine Fitzpatrick was delighted with the results achieved by the 69 pupils, and particularly pleased at the high number of students who sat the maths higher level paper.

"Wednesday was a big day for the pupils and it was magnificent to see their hard work over the years rewarded and students realising their potential," said Ms Fitzpatrick.

Top of the pile was Niall O'Keeffe from Rahan, who achieved a remarkable 600 points tally. He was followed closely by Eoin Sheehan from Mallow who scored an impressive 585 points.

Niall, who last year won a prestigious Pramerica All-Ireland youth volunteer award, said he had not expected to do so well. "I got 570 points in the pre's but never dreamt I would do so well in the real exams. I put in a lot of hard work, and everything fell into place," said Niall.

"My family have been a great support to me and I must also thank the teachers at the Patrician. I would not have been able to do it without their help," he said.

Now Niall is looking forward to going to UCC to study accountancy.

"I will miss the Academy but at the same time I am really looking forward to going to college, meeting new people and enjoying new experiences," he said.
