OVER €3 million has been approved in funding for ongoing works on major roads projects in the Mallow and Fermoy area as part of the National Road Authority's funding announcements for 2013.
The major funding allocations include €2m for the N72 Bridgetown Upper/ Castletownroche Overlay Scheme, €500,000 for the Balyhooly to Fermoy Overlay Scheme, €300,000 for the N73 Farrahy and Annakisha Bridges and €250,000 for continuing N72 realignment at Carrig.
Also announced was funding of €240,000 for repairs at Annabella, €50,000 for street design in Buttevant, €40,000 for pavement strengthening in Scart, Kildorrery and €25,000 for an N20 Access Study at Grenagh.
Local TD Tom Barry welcomed this week's announcement. "I want to thank Minister Varadkar for his continuing focus on vital improvements on the N72 and N73 in particular. I would also like to welcome this initial funding for design in relation to the badly needed streetscape work in Buttevant," he said.
"I will continue to lobby at government level for funding in our area and want to welcome the decision to continue, even in these straitened financial times, with investment in our roads infrastructure.
"Continuing roadworks are causing difficulties for people but I believe that everyone is willing to put up with the inconvenience for the improved roads network that we so badly need in this area," he said.
