THERE will be more than just a walk on the wildside in Newmarket, when a range of wildlife experts showcase their expertise next week on everything from bee keeping to birds of prey.
Rockchapel native Mairead O'Keeffe, who is the proprietor of New Leaf Health Store in Kanturk, along with Sarah Evans of the Secret Garden in Nemwarket, have joined forces to launch 'Love Your Land,' which is a celebration of the local wildlife. In addition, Charlotte Kitto of Kitto Web Designs will also play a part in this celebration of local wildlife.
Mairead told The Corkman that the reason they have joined forces is to raise awareness of environmental issues, as well as raise much needed funds for the Kilmallock based, wildlife rescue team 'Animal Magic.'
She heaped praise on Rosie and Denis of 'Animal Magic,' who "dedicate their every waking moment" to rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds and mammals, as well as educating people about their native wildlife.
On Sunday, May 11, there will be a guided walk at the Island Wood in Newmarket. Then from 2-6 p.m., at the Secret Garden, little nippers will be able to see wild animals up close. There will be birds of prey and other indigenous wildlife. There will also be the release of two rehabilitated hedgehogs.
On the day, there will also be a host of experts including representatives from the Irish Wildlife Trust and local experts at IRD Duhallow, who are working on the Life project. Subjects include bee keeping, composting, Irish waterways and poultry keeping.
"The idea behind the event is simple - to cherish our land, whether that's a couple of square yards of patio, an acre of garden, a farm, or our country of Ireland," Mairead said.
As well as a host of information, this will be a fun, social event, with traditional music and face painting, as well as a host of other activities.
"This is a free event, aimed at informing the public and raising much-needed funds for Rosie and Denis," said Mairead.
