MALLOW College is paving the way in Cork in terms of supplying top-class IT education to its students.

Its commitment to the sector has been underlined this week after the college became the first in Cork to be awarded the prestigious Microsoft Office Specialist Centre of Excellence designation.

Within the past 12-months more than 250 students at the college have completed Office 2007 tuitions, giving them proficiency in programmes including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.

Gemma Cooper, Microsoft Office specialist coordinator at the college said both staff and students were keen to take part in the initiative.

"Student's like it because it gives them access to the latest software on a recognised industry-wide platform. Certification can help students differentiate themselves in today's competitive jobs market," said Gemma.

"Staff like it because it formally recognises the skills they use on a daily basis," she added.
