GARDAI are investigating the possibility that thieves who broke into a Fermoy pharmacy may have made a hoax call to gardai before the raid in order to distract officers.

The break-in took place at the Fermoy Medical Hall on McCurtain St just after 3am last Monday morning - the third time the premises had been broken into in as many years.

A large glass window was smashed at the front of the premises activating the security alarm. In what a garda spokesman described as a "smash and grab" raid two men walked through the broken window with a large bag with carrier handles on either side.

Gardai believe the raiders went to a pre-selected shelf in the pharmacy and swept high-end items from that into the bag before leaving through the gap in the window. "The men were in the premises for less than a minute. They seemed to know exactly what it was they looking for," said the spokesman.

He said a witness saw one of the men getting into the passenger side of a dark coloured saloon car which headed off at high speed in the direction of Cork.

He was described as being in his 20s, around 5" 10 inches tall and wearing dark clothing with a hood that was pulled over his head.

It is understood that around the time of the incident a call was made to gardai in relation to a car the caller said had stopped or broken down in the fast lane of the nearby M8 motorway.

Gardai responding to the call found no such car on the motorway, leading to speculation the call may have been made by one of the men who broke into the Medical Hall or an accomplice.

The gardai spokesman confirmed such a call had been made but that it could not be positively linked to the raid at the pharmacy at this time.

He said both the robbery and the phone call were the subject of garda investigations.

It is understood this will also include them viewing CCTV footage shot in the McCurtain Street area around the time of the break-in.
