CELEBRITIES Matt Cooper and Alan Shortt convened to announce Millstreet's plans for "The Gathering", that reflected the enthusiasm and excitement for a series of festivities launched in the Wallis Arms Hotel.
Over the coming months, Millstreet will welcome hundreds of visitors on hosting an array of events but an invitation is extended to friends and associates to convene on Millstreet from July 4-7 for a special weekend of Gathering celebrations.
Joint PROs Jerry Pat O'Leary and Liam Flynn related the past eighteen months saw much work undertaken to allow a diverse menu of events initiated that's sure to delight both participants and spectators.
"We have strived to make the festival an occasion where the visitor can at the drop of a hat become a competitor in a cultural event, rediscover the beauty of our countryside or take part in a sporting event", they said.
Sons and daughters of Millstreet are invited to return in a festival that promises to boost the local economy and importantly boost the spirits of people, living in tough times.
"The festival is especially aimed at renewing contacts. So, if you live five miles, 500 miles or 5,000 miles from Millstreet, we exted a céad míle fáilte to people to go back to their roots. It could be a wonderful journey", say the organisers.
Radio personality Matt Cooper extended best wishes to the undertaking as did Alan Short In a hilarious impersonation of Finance Minister Michael Noonan.
The extended weekend celebrations begin on Thursday, July 3 with the Blessing of Clara Cross, a Teddy Bear's Picnic and a Gala Table Quiz. Friday sees the inaugural Willie Neenan Memorial Road Race and a gig to Natural Gas.
Saturday's line up includes a Millstreet Celtic FC Blitz, Walking Festival, golf classic, artisan food and craft fair, signature dish competition, busking competition, treasure hunt, GAA Family Fun Evening and Music Pub Trail. Sunday's programme offers a Cycle Race, Vintage Car Run and Historic Trail.
Overall 2013 promises to be special in Millstreet with a 20th anniversary Eurovision Party and the All-Ireland Sheep Shearing planned for May, the International Horse Show returns in August while the Orchard Motorsport Cork 20 International Rally and 40 th Anniversary Community School celebrations planned for October.
