THIS year's competitive 18 hole golf got off to a flying start in Mallow Golf Club last weekend with Mark Gleeson taking the traditional season opener, The J H Finn Jewellers 18 hole stableford competition.
Gleeson, who plays off a handicap of seven, beat a field of over 200 players (competing in three different categories) with an impressive tally of 44 points.
His victory in the St Patrick's weekend event was achieved thanks to a host of birdies on Mallow's five par 3 holes as well as some clinical approach play on some of the longer holes.
While Gleeson may have been the stand-out player last weekend there was also plenty of room for other competitors to shine with Kevin Aherne taking the Category 1 prize, Gerard Meade taking Category 2, John Gargan collecting the Category 3 award and David Conway taking the Gross.
While all the plaudits will go to the winners for last weekend's heroics, credit should also go to the green keepers for getting the course to such a level that it could respond to an early morning frost delay on Saturday and hold up superbly for the rest of the weekend.
