AN unusual exchange led to a Ballyvourney man receiving a speeding ticket - despite the fact that he was in the US at the time of the offense.

Kevin Lynch of Deertnasaggart, Ballyvourney appeared at Macroom District Court last week charged with failure to pay a speeding fine after his car was caught on camera exceeding the limit on the N22 Cork-Killarney road at Inchirahilly on March 18, 2012.

Mr Lynch told the court that, while it was his car, he could not have been driving at the time as he was working temporarily in the US at the time.

Judge James McNulty agreed to adjourn the case for two weeks to allow Mr Lynch to bring proof that he had been away to the court.

Before adjourning the matter he asked the defendant who was driving the car.

"A friend of mine who was over visiting from the States," Mr Lynch explained.

"A sort of exchange, was it?" Judge McNulty replied.

The case resumes on February 20.
