GARDAI in Mallow are seeking help from the public in the hunt for the gang behind an early morning break-in at the Boots pharmacy in the town centre.
The raiders struck at approximately 3.40am last Thursday morning using a sledgehammer to smash the window of the store. Within the space of two minutes they had escaped from the premises laden down with plastic bags full of high value perfumes and cosmetics.
A garda spokesman said that CCTV footage shot in the vicinity at the time of the incident showed two people entering the premises while another waited in a car parked outside.
"The speed with which the gang operated would suggest they knew exactly what they were looking for and where they would find it," he said.
"They targeted high retail value items, taking goods to the value of around €2,000," he added.
The men who entered the premises had covered their heads with hoodies, baseball caps and scarves. They subsequently got into the getaway car, believed to be a dark coloured Volvo estate, before driving off in the direction of Mallow Bridge and possibly the Park Road.
"CCTV footage has shown a number of cars and taxis driving along the main street around the time of the incident. We would ask any drivers, passengers or pedestrians who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact us on 022 21105," said the spokesman.
He said he did not believe that the robbery was linked to a spate of similar robberies that took place in the North Cork area last year.
"This particular incident had a slightly different modus operandi to the previous robberies," he added.
