Local man dies in fire tragedy

People in the Kilbehenny Mitchelstown and surrounding areas were saddened at the news on Tuesday night April 9 of a house fire in rural Kilbehenny around 9.45pm.

People in the Kilbehenny Mitchelstown and surrounding areas were saddened at the news on Tuesday night April 9 of a house fire in rural Kilbehenny around 9.45pm.

The blaze could be seen from the main Cork Dublin Road. It occurred in the townland of Castlequarter about a mile and half from Kilbehenny village. The two storey house was gutted and the sole occupant Ned Hyland a retired farmer lost his life.

Units of the Fire services from Kilmallock, Fermoy and Mitchelstown attended. The late Ned a bachelor farmer was in his late 70s. A man of quiet disposition he was well known locally.

He used his personal safety alarm to have his family made aware of the fire. However, he was unable to get out to safety and perished in the blaze. His popularity was borne out in the very large attendance at the removal from O'Sullivan's Funeral Kilbehenny on Thursday night to the local Church and also at the Requiem Mass and burial on Friday.

Interment took place to the adjoining cemetery. To his sisters Nellie (O'Gorman) Margaret (Breedy), Mary (Walsh) brothers David, Michael, brother in law, sister in law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews. grandnieces, relatives, neighbours and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.

THE LATE BEN CORBETT

The death occurred peacefully on April 12 at Corpus Christi Nursing Home Mitchelstown of Ben Corbett, 87 Carrigroe Mitchelstown and formerly of 10 Lr Cork St Mitchelstown where he carried out a very successful Pharmacy Business for many year.

The late Ben was in his mid 90s and was a very popular member of the local community and was widely known through his business. His popularity was borne out in the very large and represented attendance at the removal if remains from O'Brien's Funeral Home Mitchelstown on Sunday evening to the Parish Church and also at the Requiem Mass and burial on Monday.

Interment took place to the adjoining cemetery. To his wife Nell daughters Yvonne, Susan, Linda, Jean, sons in law Joachim, Barry, Declan, sisters Una, Ursula, Frances, brother Billy, sisters in law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives neighbours and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.

THE LATE JIM BAKER

The death occurred at Abbeylands Nursing Home Kildorrery on April 12 of James (Jim) Baker, Nutgrove Ballindangan. The late Jim was in his 90s was a very popular member of the local community being a thatcher by trade up to his retirement many years ago.

His popularity was borne out in the large attendance at the removal on Sunday night from O'Brien's Funeral Home Mitchelstown to Ballindangan Church and also at the Requiem Mass and burial on Monday. Interment took place to St Dominic's Cemetery Glanworth. To his wife Nora (Nee Kiely) sons Tommy, Noel, Michael, James, Colm, Kevin, Morgan daughters Pearl (Fitzgerald) Mary (McSweeney) sisters in law, brothers in law, sons in law, daughters in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends we tender our sincere sympathy.

OPEN AIR MASS

There was a fine attendance at Knockadea Community Centre on Friday night for Open Air Mass. This was a 'Spring Mass' where the celebrant Fr Tom Breen Ballylanders blessed animals, pets, hens, land, water and stone.

There was a pageant representing St Patrick, St Brigid and St Mollagga. Prayers for sick people locally were offered. A very enjoyable cup of tea and refreshments were served afterwards in the Sports Complex.

KILDORRERY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT LOTTO
