Kilavoultra house fire spread very rapidly

AUTHORITIES have carried out a technical examination of the scene of Monday's fatal house fire as the community of Kilvoultra, outside Macroom, comes to term with the tragic blaze.

Mother-of-six Bina O'Connor (85), died of smoke inhalation following the fire, which broke out shortly after 7am on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Macroom Fire Brigade told The Corkman that Gardai have conducted a technical analysis of the scene in an attempt to establish the cause of the fire. He said the blaze spread quickly as the house was an older structure.

Two units of the fire brigade were able to quickly put out the fire but the blaze caused major structural damage which led to part of the roof collapsing.

A son of Mrs O'Connor was able to rescue her daughter, Margaret, who has Down Syndrome, from the fire.

Mrs O'Connor's funeral was held in Clondrohid Church on Wednesday and she was buried in St. Colman's Cemetery Macroom.

She is survived by her children Richard, Diarmuid, Stephen, Donal, Kathleen and Margaret.
