MACROOM Town Council is to investigate the possibility of installing an advanced CCTV system to monitor the streets of the town.

MACROOM Town Council is to investigate the possibility of installing an advanced CCTV system to monitor the streets of the town.

The security camera system, estimated to cost approximately €40,000 to install, would provide Gardai with 24/7 images of the town's main street and may even be able to detect the number plates of vehicles reported for criminal activity.

The Council is to study the installation of a similar system in Kanturk to see how it works.

Extra investment in the technology could see a system whereby the cameras automatically read car number plates and cross reference them against a database of vehicles reported to the Gardai for criminal activity.
