Gardai attacked in Halloween mayhem

EMERGENCY services were targeted by stone-throwing thugs after being called to the scene of two fires in the Annabella area of Mallow on Halloween night.

In one incident gardai and fire service personnel were abused and had rocks thrown at them as they fought to bring a fire at a vacant bungalow in Annabella Park under control.

In another incident, Gardai and firefighters were also subjected to verbal abuse and had stones thrown at them when they attended a bonfire in nearby Annabella Court.

In what was a busy night for the emergency services, gardai arrested three youths in the Woodview Drive area of the town after stones were thrown at gardai.

Windows were also smashed and damage caused to houses in Pinewood and Ballydaheen.

"You hear about this kind of thing happening in cites such as Cork and Dublin, but this is the first time we have ever faced this kind of abuse in Mallow. Unfortunately this seems to be a sign of the times," Tony Douglas, station officer with the Mallow Fire Service, told The Corkman.
