Cork couple defy the odds at British Podcast Awards

Kenneth Kelleher

A Cork couple living in London are celebrating this week after beating off stiff competition to win 'Best New Podcast' at the prestigious British Podcast Awards last Saturday night for their show, 'The Cinemile'.

Dave Corkery and Cathy Cullen, from Mourneabbey and Cork city, won the prestigious gong for a simple premise that revolves around the pair discussing movies on their walk home from the cinema. Each weekly episode is 20 minutes.

The show, which they started producing last year, defied all the odds, fending off competition from big budget productions from the BBC and radio DJ Edith Bowman.

Despite the fact that there are a slew of movie podcasts available, Dave and Cathy's show stood out for it's charm and humour rather than it's film critique, with the show regularly descending into hilarious marital bickering and disagreement.

Speaking on their victory, Cathy said: "We were so shocked when they called our name - it's so amazing, we were just so happy to be nominated in the same category as Edith Bowman and the BBC. We didn't think we'd ever actually win".

Plaudits for the show have been coming thick and fast, with Miranda Sawyer of the The Observer in the UK referring to it as "sufficed with charm and insight"

Episodes of the podcast are available at www.thecinemile.com.
