ON Tuesday next at 8pm Springfort Hall will play host to the launch of The Collected Letters of Canon Sheehan of Doneraile.
The book contains 293 letters sourced from the Sheehan papers from the Presentation Sisters, Southern Province, the Russell papers from Irish Province of the Jesuit Fathers and the Heuser papers from the Archdiocesan Historical Research Centre in Philadelphia.
To add to these, up to sixteen more letters were sourced from smaller desposits, such as the Library of the Law School of Harvard University and Boole Library of University College Cork. Another letter comes from the private possession of the Very Reverend Gerard Canon Casey, parish priest of Mallow.
The collection gives a rare insight into the personality, character and outlook of Canon Sheehan. It tracks his historic novels and other writings and it highlights the philosophy, theology and literary concerns of the Catholic Church in the years proceding World War I.
