Burglars make off with car and later drive into routine Garda checkpoint

Maria Herlihy

Luck ran out for two Mallow men who stole a van in Mallow and later drove straight into a routine Garda checkpoint in Glanmire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Corkman spoke to a senior garda who said the duo broke into a house in Mallow in the early hours of Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and stole car keys which were in a utility room. Outside they took a white van and at 7.25am, they filled up with diesel and drove off without paying, which was recorded on CCTV.

One of the people arrested is only 15 years-old and the other is in his early 20s. A routine Garda traffic checkpoint was in operation on Wednesday morning at the Lower Glanmire Road when at 11.05am, the duo in the white van approached. They were both arrested and taken to Glanmire Garda station for questioning.

Cork North West TD, Michael Moynihan has said there is great delight in Ballydesmond at An Post's decision to retain the local post office following a "hard fought grassroots campaign"

"There was deep concern in the town when the local postmistress, Ann Vaughan announced her retirement, and An Post refused to advertise for a replacement," said Deputy Moynihan.

"It's now really important that the local community supports the post office, and uses the services on offer as much as possible," he added.
