MACROOM Boxing Club teenage star Christina Desmond is set to join Olympic champion Katie Taylor on the European stage.
The national boxing champion from Cúil a'Bhuachaigh in the Múscraí Gaeltacht has been selected on the nine-woman-Irish team to compete in the European Union Women's Boxing Championships in Hungary next month.
Christina Desmond won her fourth consecutive All-Ireland boxing title earlier this year when she won the national Girl 6 under 16 championship in the 70kg weight division, and she recently stepped up a notch to add the under 18 title to her achievements.
The fifth year student at Coláiste Ghobnatan in Baile Bhúirne will be boxing for Ireland in the Youth under 18 division at the European Union Championships, which will be held in the city of Keszthely in Hungary.
Olympic and world champion Katie Taylor will be defending her elite European title in Hungary, one she has already won four times in succession.
It will not be the first time for Christina Desmond and Katie Taylor to share the same ring, as Christina boxed in a pre-Olympic warm-up tournament for Katie in Cork last year, on a night when both boxers won.
Christina is a twin-sister of national under-age boxing champion Michael Desmond - and the twins are also road bowlers with Ból-Chumann na hÉireann, Réigiún na Gaeltachta, and they both play football for their school, Coláiste Ghobnatan.
The 17-year-old sports star was recently presented with a county medal at a special medals presentation night for four successful Coláiste Ghobnatan football teams, as she was a member of the school-team who won the County Cork Senior Girls VEC Football Championship this year.
She has won five national underage boxing titles since 2010, from under 13 up to under 18 divisions.
Christina will be making regular trips to Dublin this month for training sessions with her fellow boxers on the Irish Women's team, who will compete at the EU Boxing Championships in Hungary from 30 June to 7 July.
