MANY tears were shed last Monday in St Lachtaín's Church, Cill na Martra, at the funeral of a woman of great faith, fun and fortitude.

Beloved wife of Criostóir and mother of four, Helen Desmond, Cúil a'Bhuachaigh, passed away last weekend just a few days short of her 48th birthday.

It was only three weeks since Helen travelled to Dublin with a jubilant bunch of family members and friends to welcome home her 17-year-old daughter, Christina, who had won a silver medal at the World Youth Boxing Championships in Bulgaria.

The sight of her mother and grandmother, Máirín, sitting at the front of the Cork crew in the airport terminal with a welcome home sign brought tears of to her eyes.

"I cried then like I am crying now," Christina told the congregation on Monday.
