ON January 18, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins made a special visit to Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, and Bishop McEgan College were delighted to be a part of the celebrations.
In honour of his visit over 300 students from all over the Cork County VEC got the opportunity to sing in a massed choir for his arrival. McEgan College were proud to send forward nine pupils, Sheila Twomey, Aisling O'Driscoll, Aoife O'Driscoll, Eleanor Lane, Muireann Kelleher, Jordan O'Donoghue, Claudia O'Leary, Philip Looney and David Lynch to represent the College at the prestigious event.
Preparation for the event included the pupils giving up their spare time to attend several rehearsals in Colaiste Choilm as well as having to learn many songs "as Gaeilge." President Higgins and his wife Sabina were very appreciative of the hard work and gave the students a standing ovation. He praised the dedication and commitment of the students involved. He spoke highly of the Arts and he quoted Plato during his speech: "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything."
McEgan College are, justifiably, very proud of their students and all their hard work and to make sure they looked their best on the day, McEgan College bought new school blazers especially for the ceremony.
It was a very special opportunity for students to meet the president and all at McEgan College are delighted to have been part of the ceremony.
