Showing off the village's great people

LAST Sunday's Féile Lachtaín Naofa began with a broadcasted Mass on Raidio na Gaeltachta. As always an tAthair de Brún, Cór Chill na Martra and the ministers of the Word did us proud. Míle comhghairdeas.
Numbers at the Parade were down no doubt due to the bitter cold and cutting wind but great credit is due to all who participated. History was made when a Lord Mayor made an inaugural appearance at our parade.
The Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Baile na Groí, Rita and Johnny travelled in the oldest vintage car.
Naomh Lachtaín with his famous Lámh led the way accompanied by musicians Dan and Ger on saxophones and their drummer band. A soldier complete with bear skin marched down from Prince August.
The daoine beaga from the Naoinra braved the cold led by their leader, Máire. Next came the pupils of Scoil Lachtaín Naofa displaying their magnificent artwork based on their Brat Glas. Once more Maura's work was spectacular.
The first float provided loads of ceol and craic thanks to Craobh Lachtaín Naofa de Comhaltas. A big go raibh maith agat to Muitear Baile na Groí who brought their Gathering float. Chernobyl Orphan's Fund thanked all donors through the Wanderly Wagon towed by a Joker Camper.
The vintage group was very varied ranging from old tractors, cars and a motor bike. Special thanks to the loyal men of steel from Johnstown Vintage Club and Béal Athan Ghaorthaidh who braved the cold and wind to come.
Later Anne's refreshments were enjoyed with relish in the Ionad Pobail and celebrations continued with plenty of ceol, amhránaíocht and rince from the pupils of Scoil Lachtaín Naofa.
Mile buíochas do cách.
