THE Patrician Academy in Mallow will herald a new chapter in its long and illustrious history with the official opening of its new sports hall.

The new €1 million sports hall/gymnasium and conference room have been since it was completed in October of last year.

One of its first major uses took place a matter of weeks later when teachers, children and their parents gathered for the visit of 800-metre world record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha.

The Kenyan long-distance runner was given a heroes welcome when he visited the school, accompanied by his mentor and coach, Mallow born Brother Colm O'Connell.

The hall will be officially opened by Professor Don Barry, President, University of Limerick following a formal blessing by the Bishop of Cloyne, the Most Rev Dr William Crean.
