THE nominees for the 2012 Mallow Sports and Leisure youth awards were unveiled last Monday night during an after-hours reception at the AIB branch in Mallow.
Now in their 23rd year the awards, sponsored by the AIB and The Corkman, honour the groups and individuals from the Mallow area for their outstanding contributions to the local sports and leisure sector over the previous 12-months.
Often the sterling work of those who strive tirelessly and without reward goes unnoticed, even by the countless people who benefit from their selfless generosity and boundless enthusiasm.
However, Liam Ware, chairman of the Mallow Sports and Leisure Council, is only too aware of how important their efforts, both individually and collectively, are to the local community.
"There are so many people and bodies out there who put an immense amount of time and effort into supporting the community, giving their energy and expertise voluntarily and with no fanfare," said Mr Ware.
"These awards are our way of saying congratulations on their achievements and thank you on behalf of a grateful community," he added.
All of the winners will presented with their awards, by guest of honour former Cork footballer Tony Davis, at a glittering ceremony in the Springfort Hall on Friday, March 1.
Tickets for the evening, which will include a three-course meal and music by The Skas, costs €38 and are available from Liam Ware on 086 0355825.
