IT was a landmark year for Macroom, as the Mid Cork town staked its claim as a major destination for lovers of fine cuisine with its first-ever Food Festival.
The event was launched at a special, invite-only event at Bealick Mill that showcased the best local food producers had to offer. Festival organisers hoped the event would be worth €100,000 to the local economy -- and their expectations were surpassed when the October festival came around.
Catherine Costello, of the organising committee, said that the crowds that came to Macroom to sample the food, entertainment and atmosphere of the event exceeded promoters' expectations.
"We are thrilled with how it went, it was a great success. We reckon that on Sunday about five to six thousand people came to the market, which surpassed expectations. The traders were very happy with it too," she said at the time.
Plans are already underway for 2013.
