AFTER 26 years of excellent service to the people of Mallow and further afield, Phil Barry has closed her shoe retail business, news which was received recently with much regret by many people in the region.
The highly popular business woman's father, Tommy, opened for business at O'Brien Street corner in 1949 and he opened the shoe shop in 1979.
Phil, who had spent some time in Boston in the US, returned home in 1987 to run the shop which she did up to its closure with a wonderful manner and respect for all her customers and staff.
Marion Gould from Doneraile, who joined the team after school at the age of 17, has spent 37 years with the Barry retailers and remained with Phil when she took the reins in 1987 while Marie Ring from Ballyclough has served ten years in the shop.
Marie admitted she will miss all the loyal customers, some who became good friends.
Marion says she enjoyed every minute of employment and she too will miss all the activity over the years.
Phil, in a tribute to her customers, positioned a framed Examiner full page advertising supplement from 1979 on the front window.
Phil said she had special memories of magnificent customers and loyal employees and she thanks all those over the decades for their custom and friendship.
It's the end of an era for a wonderful woman and her excellent staff. We wish them well.
