Celebration of victory

VICTORY SOCIAL: A momentous occasion in Clyda Rovers history was celebrated in style in Springfort Hall last Saturday night. A full house gathered for an evening of presentations to the winning teams of Clyda Rovers and Mourneabbey Ladies Football, where there was an impressive array of silverware on display. MC for the night was Martin Kiely, who professionally presided over and entertained all there, on what was to be a very busy evening .

VICTORY SOCIAL: A momentous occasion in Clyda Rovers history was celebrated in style in Springfort Hall last Saturday night. A full house gathered for an evening of presentations to the winning teams of Clyda Rovers and Mourneabbey Ladies Football, where there was an impressive array of silverware on display. MC for the night was Martin Kiely, who professionally presided over and entertained all there, on what was to be a very busy evening .

Invited guests on the night included John Looney Club President, Fr O Keeffe, Denis Twomey North Cork Board, Michael Byrne Cork County Board, Paddy Ryan Sports Reporter, John O Donnell and his wife Rosie Avondhu Board, and special guest Conor Counihan and his wife Elaine. Club Secretary Aisling Murphy opened proceedings by welcoming everyone to the night.

RAPTUROUS APPLAUSE

The Premier Intermediate Football team then entered the room to a rapturous applause led by team captain Oliver O Hanlon. Martin Kiely then gave his opening speech, in which he congratulated the Club on its success and how he was delighted to be asked along to the night to share in the celebrations. Martin first handed over to newly elected Chairperson of Mourneabbey Ladies Football Club Catherine Crowley, to whom along with her fellow officers we send every good wish . Catherine gave a comprehensive speech on the success of the club during the year and their hopes for 2014 going forward.

The club won the u21A County Championship and the Senior B County Championship in 2013 and medals were presented to all involved . Clyda Club Chairman Jeremiah Ronayne and Vice Chairman Donie Mulcahy made presentations to Ciara, Roisin and Doireann O Sullivan, Maire O Callaghan and Brid O Sullivan, members of the All Ireland Cork Ladies Football Team in 2013.

PRESENTATIONS

Presentations were also made to newly married couples Gavin and Caroline Carey and John and Jackie O Hanlon to whom the club sends it's heartiest congratulations. The Club Person of the Year Award went to the Intermediate Football Manager John Walsh in recognition of all his work both with the Intermediate Team and the Club in general. John received the John Stack Memorial Trophy.

This is the first year of this trophy, which is in memory of former Club President and Club stalwart John Stack. John Walsh then presented the Club Person of the Year 2012 to Tadhg O Connor in recognition of his success with the Minor Football and hurling teams.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

There is also a new trophy for the Player of the Year, The Joe Walsh Memorial Trophy, in memory of former Club President Joe Walsh who died last year. Joe, who along with his friend, the late John Hegarty who also died last year did trogon work for the club. Joe's wife Eily who also died in the past twelve months was also remembered. Robert, Joe's son presented the trophy to Fionn O Shea. Martin Kiely, in an interview with Fionn complimented him on his outfit for the night and his success with DCU. Fionn then presented the joint Player Of The Year 2012 to Chris Buckley and Chris Kenny.

A presentation was made by Conor Counihan to Conor O Sullivan, who won a Munster u21 Football Medal with Cork last year and to Paudie Kissane to mark his retirement from Cork Football. Conor wished Paudie every success in his new role with the Clare Footballers.

MINORS

Next up were the Minor Football and Hurling panels, who won the double championship and league finals . Michael Byrne of the County Board congratulated the Club on its great success and presented the medals to the minor panels. Hurling captain Sean O Connor, and Football captain Conor Crowley made presentations to coaches and selectors Padhraic O Mullane, Tadhg O Connor, Thomas Harold, Niall Crowley, Barty O Connor, Dan O Sullivan, Christopher Buckley and Diarmuid O Shea. Conor and Sean also presented Doreen Murphy of The Railway Bar with a bouquet of flowers as a token of their appreciation for all the food she provided after their games throughout the year. Denis Twomey of The North Cork Board presented the u21 hurlers with their North Cork Medals. Team Captain Christopher Buckley made a presentation to team coach Tadhg O Mullane, manager Fergal Cronin, and selectors John Roche, Liam Madden, Kevin Creedon and Robert Walsh. Next up were the Junior B Footballers, who won the North Cork Championship. John O Donnell of The Avondhu Board congratulated Clyda on their great win and praised the club on its board delegates, Aisling Murphy the current delegate and Tom Dorgan for all his work in the past. John then presented the panel with their medals.

PRESENTATION

Team captain Pa Forde made a presentation to team coach Derry Cronin, Manager Liam Cronin, and Selectors Donie Mulcahy, Dan Joe Browne, Tommy Walsh and Mick O Shea. MC Martin Kiely then introduced the special guest former Cork Football Manager Conor Counihan. Conor congratulated Clyda on winning the County and Munster Finals and knew what it meant being from a small club himself. He paid special tribute to Ray Carey and Paudie Kissane, who were both part of the Cork panel when he was manager and praised them for the contribution they made to Corks success at league level and in their 2010 All Ireland Win.

In his playing days Conor had come up against former Clyda players Jerry O Sullivan and Noel Carey. He said it was great to see such a strong ladies Football Club in Clyda as well and how successful Mourneabbey ladies had been with Cork Football. Conor wished the Club all the best in their senior campaign and went onto present the Intermediate panel with their medals. Team captain Oliver O Hanlon made a presentation to coach Ned English, manager John Walsh, selectors Cormac O Sullivan, Jerry O Sullivan, Vincent Twomey and Brian Flanagan, logistics Fergal Cronin, video analysis Noel Walsh, physio Caroline Coughlan. In his speech Oliver thanked Ned for all he had done for the team in bringing them to County and Munster success and for believing they could win. He thanked the selectors and club officers for their contribution to the teams success. Oliver also paid tribute to the Clyda supporters who were with the team every step of the way. Next up was the man himself Ned English. Martin Kiely praised Ned for his dedication to the game over the years. Ned in his speech praised the Club, the players and the community . He said Clyda was a great club with a bright future. Club Chairman Jeremiah Ronayne then closed the speeches. He thanked everyone for coming to the night. He praised the club on its success and is looking forward to the new year . He thanked the Management and Staff of Springfort Hall for the excellent meal and service during the evening. He thanked Martin Kiely for an excellent job, and thanked the invited guests for coming to the night. Jeremiah then made a presentation to Conor Counihan and his wife Elaine.

Finally he thanked club secretary Aisling Murphy for all the work she did in making the night such a success and presented her with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation. It was then onto the dance floor where young and not so young danced to the Boogie Boys into the early hours . A great night was had by all on a great occasion !!

FIXTURES

U21 football V Fermoy at 3 pm Saturday 1st March. Venue to be decided. Division 2 football league V Abbey Rovers away at 3pm. Division 2 football league V Newmarket in Mourneabbey at 8pm.
