TIME is fast running out for nominations for the 23rd annual Corkman sponsored Mallow Sports and Leisure Awards with the deadline set for next Friday, January 25.

The winners of the awards will be unveiled at a gala ceremony at Springfort Hall Hotel on Friday, March 1.

The event, the highlight of the Mallow social calendar, will honour both individuals and groups for their achievements and outstanding voluntary efforts within the sport and leisure fields over the past 12 months.

The adult awards are open to nominees over the age of 18 on December 31 last in three categories: sport, leisure and club person.

The youth awards fall into two categories, sport and leisure, with eligible nominees being aged between 14 and 18 years on December 21 last.

Any individual or organisation can nominate candidates who have striven to achieve their own personal goals or whose work has been instrumental in helping others to achieve theirs.

The chairman of the Mallow Sports and Leisure Council, Liam Ware, said that there has already been huge interest in the awards, which he said get more popular with each passing year.

"Often the work of those who work hard to achieve their aims and of those who give their time selflessly for the benefit of others goes unheralded. These awards are about recognising the unsung heroes within our community whose work can often be taken for granted even by those who benefit from it," said Mr Ware.

"This is our way of saying congratulations and thank you," he added.

Each year the council gives out two special awards to an outstanding individual and group whose consistent efforts over the years have made a very real and tangible contribution to the community in Mallow.

The recipient of this years Hall of Fame Award is Mick Bourke, who is being honoured for his work on behalf of the Community Games both at local and national level.

The Community Awards will be given to the Mallow Rotary Club for the work it has done in helping out countless other groups and individuals.

The chosen nominees will be unveiled at functions at the local branch of the AIB bank and in the offices of the Corkman next month.

Nominations forms are available form the Corkman offices, the AIB in Mallow, local sports clubs or Liam Ware on 086 0355825.
