THE recognition afforded to members of Charleville G.A.A. Club by granting them honorary membership of the club for outstanding service rendered over many years was long overdue, a fact acknowledged by the executive chairman Michael Walsh, when he addressed the attendance at the function in the G.A.A. Centre at Baker's Road.
Among those who were so honoured were Donie Forde, who is also on the executive committee, John Hawe, Jackie and Eileen Hanley and Ted Touhy who have been associated with the Dr. Mannix Sportsfield Committee over a long number of years. They have sacrificed their Sunday evenings to run the weekly bingo session at the community hall, which is a source of valuable income for the club.
Jim O'Callaghan is the long standing treasurer of the club and his wife Maura is also involved in the G.A.A. Centre, as is Emma Pettit and Eileen Hanley. Matt O'Callaghan is a former playing member of the club and is now on the executive committee and fellow committee member, John O'Donnell, is also the current chairman of the North Cork Board G.A.A.
Another member who was deservedly accorded the honour was Martin Condon, the Managing Director of Cavanagh's of Charleville. This ardent G.A.A. man has been a huge supporter of the Charleville club, not alone as a former player and committee man, but also in the form of the vital sponsorship that the award winning Ford dealership has donated to the club over a long number of years.
"The club owes Martin and Cavanagh's a huge debt of gratitude for their support, through the lean times and the good times. This gesture here this evening to the recipient members is but a small token of our gratitude for their generous contribution to the Charleville club and it is long overdue," said Michael Walsh.
