DUHALLOW'S largest employer notched up a prestigious Green Award for their Passive window range.

Munster Joinery at Ballydesmond, which it is understood has approximately 800 people employed at their 65 acre site.

Gemma Ring, who is the daughter of Donie Ring, the owner of Munster Joinery said they were "delighted" to receive the award.

She said: "This is the first time a window and door company has received this award."

"Munster Joinery is the only Irish company to design, develop and manufacture these Passive certified windows," she said.

She said Munster Joinery has also looked to reducing their environmental impact of their huge energy requirements. In 2009, they installed two wind turbines, with an electrical output of 4.2 megawatts. The award ceremony was held at the Burlington hotel in Dublin recently.

The Green Awards are given to companies, organisations and individuals for substantial efforts in tackling climate change through innovative sustainable initiatives.

"This award comes at a great time for Munster Joinery. We are now celebrating 40 years in business," she said.
