Having a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in Duhallow helps pump new life and energy into the catchment region and provides for a more stable economy which in turn leads to greater harmony.
In equal measure, having a long established family businesses in the region, who continue to progress their company each year, ensures that trickles of growth gather and get stronger with each passing year.
One aspect of the true fighting spirit in Duhallow has always been the entrepreneurial spirit and that is showing no sign of slowing down any time soon.
IRD Duhallow has been at the forefront of recognising excellent business opportunities and putting their financial weight and advice behind a deluge of budding entrepreneurs over the years.
Michael Twohig of Supervalu Kanturk has a long history with IRD Duhallow and it is his firm view that the Duhallow Business Awards are an ideal way to give recognition to the businesses in the region who have pumped blood, sweat, and perhaps a few tears, into their business over the years and watched it gently flourish.
"I am a firm believer that the rural area needs to be kept alive and the way that is achieved is by the existence of entrepreneurs as well as small factories who start up in the heart of Duhallow and give it their all," Michael told The Corkman.
In fact, he said in the last number of years, since the economy began to shake, he has heard it from his own customers on countless occasions in his own Supervalu in Kanturk of the importance of buying local food produce, as it keeps the economy ticking over and importantly it keeps jobs in Duhallow.
"When people are aware of the importance of supporting local producers and suppliers, it really leads to vibrancy in any town. And it isn't just retail but in equal measure manufacturing. There really is something to be said about the young man or woman who sets up a company and employs four or five people and gives it their all," he said.
Mr Twohig said: "The Duhallow Business Awards will not only give the businesses who put their names forward recognition but in equal measure the staff standing united behind the company must also be recognised.
"Even if a company doesn't win an award, it must not be forgotten that the company is functioning and is on the map in Duhallow."
He said that he has seen it himself over the years when Supervalu run a competition and it gets the staff really involved and camaraderie builds up.
"For the staff, there is equally a great sense of achievement and it is only right and fair that staff are also recognised. The staff are the backbone of so many businesses," he said.
"I really think the Duhallow Business Awards is a long time coming, and it is just fantastic that in a few short weeks, there will be companies in the region who will get the recognition they truly deserve," he said.
