War of Independence recalled
Some traumatic events in the War of Independence era will be shown at the next meeting of the Muskerry Local History Society on Monday April 10.
A slide show presentation and commentary by Tim O'Brien at the Ballincollig Rugby Club at 8pm will highlight the deaths of hunger strikers Michael Fitzgerald of Fermoy, and Joe Murphy, Pouladuff, Cork City at Cork Gaol where they were in custody as untried republican prisoners in 1920. Fitzgerald died after 67 days and Murphy after 76. It will also highlight the deaths of the Delany brothers at Kilbarry, Dublin Hill on the morning after the 'Great Cork Fire' of December 1920 as well as the fatal injuries received by six young volunteers at Ballycannon in the Clogheen/Kerry Pike at the hands of British soldiers. There will be photographic coverage of the re-patriation of the Capuchin friars Fr Albert and Fr Dominic from the United States to Cork in 1958. Proceeds from the night will go to Marymount Hospice.
