AN exclusive first broadcast by Peadar Ó Riada of traditional music that inspired Beethoven, and a rare recording of Seán Ó'Riada and Cór Chúil Aodha in Cork from 1970, will feature on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta over Culture Night weekend.

On Culture Night, this Friday, September 20, Peadar Ó Riada will celebrate the 700th edition of his traditional music programme 'Cuireadh chun Ceoil' with a special show which will include an exclusive first broadcast of Peadar's work on music by Beethoven, as well as music from other cultures of the world including Mali, Lesotho, India and Australia, and traditional Irish music.

Beethoven added orchestral arrangements to 77 traditional Irish tunes, but of these there are 12 for which only Beethoven's arrangement remains, and no information about the original tunes they were based on.

Peadar was asked to 'retro engineer' some of these pieces to uncover the original tunes, and they can be heard on the special edition of Cuireadh chun Ceoil on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta for Culture Night, 20 September, at 7pm.

A rare recording of Seán Ó Riada will also have its first broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta this weekend, on Saturday, on the inaugural programme in a new series of traditional music programme Timpeall an Tí.

The recording of Seán Ó Riada, together with Cór Chúil Aodha and Diarmuidín Ó Súilleabháin, was made in the Aula Maxima in UCC in 1970, and is now one of the many priceless recordings contained in the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta archives at their Kerry base in Baile na nGall.

Tune in to the special edition of Peadar Ó Riada's Cuireadh Chun Ceoil on Friday at 7pm, and tune to the first edition in a new series of Timpeall an Tí on Saturday at 7pm.
