A FITNESS trend that has been growing worldwide is to hold its first Irish event outside Dublin in Macroom.
Parkrun is a free weekly 5km run for people of all standards which is to take place in the Castle Demense every Saturday at 9:30am, starting this weekend.
Organisers say the run is not a race, but a timed run and participants can run the 5km for whatever reason, be it for fun, a challenge among friends or as part of a training plan.
"It offers an opportunity for the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability, this event is truly open to all and the best thing is it's free," organisers said.
Macroom has been selected as the first Parkrun in Munster, and the only other Parkrun in the Republic of Ireland outside Dublin. There are 9 parkrun's in Northern Ireland and over 180 Parkrun's in the UK every Saturday.
Parkrun is a not for profit organisation that provides, through local communities, free weekly timed 5km runs all over the world.
Those wishing to take park need to register in advance of their first run by logging onto www.macroomleisurecntre.ie or www.parkrun.ie. Once registered runners are sent a registration confirmation email containing your barcode and information on what to do next.
For further information or if you would like to volunteer at any of the runs contact Yvonne on 026-43508.
