Mairead bids for Blue Jean Country Queen title

Mairead O'Connor is Avondhu's representative in the 2013 Blue Jean Country Queen Festival, the twenty sixth to date organised by Meath Macra na Feirme.
The festival, taking place over the June Bank Holiday weekend, will open its doors this year to a host of visitors from all over the world, who as part of the Gathering celebrations will be arriving in Athboy, Co. Meath to enjoy a weekend that promises something for everyone.
Planning a huge array of events to entertain their guests, including a world record attempt to create a giant blue denim mosaic, a community CD launch and tours of some local tourist attractions including the impressive Trim Castle, it certainly promises to be one of the best festivals yet!
With entries this year from all over Ireland and including International contestants from Denmark, France, Slovenia and Sweden, they will join visitors travelling from as far as Australia and New Zealand to sample the entertainment on offer in this busy Co. Meath town.
Mairead and the other 29 expected Queens are guaranteed a fun-filled, action-packed weekend. From Friday 31st May when they are interviewed on stage, to the final music session on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, they have a hectic schedule.
Saturday afternoon sees Mairead and the other queens taking to the streets for a carnival which guarantees fun and frolics for all the family. While on Sunday the Queens will change from fancy dress to modelling dress to formal dress all within twelve hours!
Among the top national artists on this year's programme are Joe Fury and The Hayride, who along with popular DJ Mark Caffrey play in the Festival marquee on Saturday 1st June, and the Nine Inch Trio who play on Sunday 2nd June. The presence of Matt & Paul Leavy and Old Stagecoach on the itinerary ensure that all musical tastes are catered for.
Mairead is a 22 year old member of Sliabh Luachra branch of Macra na Feirme and is a Food Scientist. She has a keen interest in Irish Music and plays the violin and concertina. Some of her other hobbies include cycling, motor sports, going to concerts and movies.
Although fun is the name of the game, Mairead and the other Queens will be competing for some wonderful prizes. First place receives prizes to the value of €1,000 and the title of Blue Jean Country Queen 2013.
The runner-up will receive €600 while the winner of third prize receives €300. The prizes will be presented by representatives of the main sponsors - Stephens Cooke & Co., Gilsenan Brothers and O'Reilly Hoofcare Services.
The winner of 2013 Blue Jean Country Queen title will be announced at midnight on Sunday 2nd June and will be crowned by reigning queen, Wexford's Leanne Brennan.
