The sixth annual Charleville Thorny Rose contest was won by 'Jemma' aka Jamie Walsh representing the Pro Shop at Charleville Golf Club in the contest, which was run off at Club D'Ville at the Charleville Park Hotel on last Sunday night.

Jemma won from seven other contestants representing local bars and businesses who vied for the title before a packed attendance.

The event is organised by local man Tommy Harrold and his committee in aid of Heart Children Ireland and Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Dublin. To date the event has raised in excess of €50,000 over the past five years and this year's competition was another great success for the charities.

Originally the contest was part of the Electric Eighties weekend but this has now been whittled down to a one night event with the eight contestants entering into the spirit of the event to raise much needed fiancé to help young children in need of cardiac treatment.

Represented in Sunday night's event were Charleville AFC, whose persona, 'Jean' (Ian Ryan) represented the club. 'Jemma' (Jamie Walsh), was the Pro Shop at Charleville Golf Club's entry, while Eoin Doyle's 'Joan' represented the Ian Doyle, the Coal King, Sean Carroll as Shauniqua was in for the Charleville Park Hotel and Ryan Brennan was 'Roxy' for O'Connell's Bar.

Donagh McAuliffe as 'Donna' was the Dinny's Bar entry and Timmy Crean as 'Tammy' represented Lee's Centra shops, while Buttevant's David 'Daisy' O'Mahony was 'Daisy' for the Bridge Bar, Shinanagh. The host and MC for the evening was Divine Diana. Last year's winner, James Mullins 'Jacinta' was one of the judges along with Kevin Owens (junior) and James Foley.

One disgruntled entrant 'Martina' (Martin O'Connor) who was disqualified last year made a dramatic entrance to the stage demanding to be let back into the contest, providing much entertainment for the packed hall, but her efforts at re-entry were of no avail and he/she was again rejected.

Committee chairman, Tommy Harrold thanked all who had entered the competition, particularly the contestants, their sponsors and the audience who had come out in such numbers in support of a great cause.
