THE town of Mallow is set bring the year of The Gathering to a spectacular conclusion with a magical firework display that is set to light up the sky on New Years Eve for miles around.
This is the second year in succession that the firework display, the brainchild of County Mayor Noel O'Connor, will take place with the Arches Bar car park set to again provide a wonderful viewing point for the event.
"When I took over as Mallow town mayor in June 2012, I made a promise to initiate a major event for the New Year. I wanted it to be a family night that the whole community could enjoy," said Cllr O'Connor.
"It has been a wonderful year for Mallow and I think this will be the perfect way to mark the end of The Gathering, an initiative that has seen so many wonderful and varied events take place in North Cork over the past 12-months," he added.
People will begin to gather at the Arches Bar from 9.30pm, with free live music and entertainment laid on prior to the setting off of the fireworks at 10.30pm.
The event will cost in the region of €5,000 to stage, with Mallow Town Council forking out €1,000 and Blackwater Valley Tourism and the Arches Bar covering the remaining cost.
Last year's display attracted thousands of spectators, with people travelling from all over the North Cork area and Cork City to enjoy it.
Cllr O'Connor said he was delighted the firework display would be happening again this year, adding he hoped it would become a regular feature on the Mallow social calendar.
"I think it is fitting that the River Blackwater, one of North Cork's most beautiful natural attractions should be the backdrop for this spectacular event," said Cllr O'Connor. "I am not aware of any other display of this kind taking place anywhere else in the county on New Year's Eve. I really do think that an annual event on this scale will make Mallow the place to be every New Year's Eve," he added.
