WHEN life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. So, when you are dumped just days before your big break on the country's most watched talent show what else can you do but sing a break-up song?
That was the situation faced by Mallow native Shannon Murphy, who took to the stage on RTÉ's Voice of Ireland show just days after her break-up - and sang a cover of Taylor Swift's We Are Never Getting Back Together.
"I was broken up with three days before the audition, so I thought it was funny. I kind of wanted to sing it anyway, and it was one of a couple of songs I was thinking about but I hadn't fully decided yet," Shannon told The Corkman this week.
Her rendition went down a treat, however, with three of the four judges turning their chairs in a bid to add Shannon to their team.
While Shannon chose Bressie, who she admits was her favourite judge from last year, Sharon Corr ran the ex-Blizzards frontman close.
"Sharon was a very, very close second. She said a lot more in her pitch to me than was shown on the programme," she revealed.
While the show went out on Sunday night, Shannon's audition was filmed months ago, which meant months of biting her lip and keeping her news to herself.
"It was filmed in October, but I couldn't tell anyone. I was bursting to tell everyone, but in a way it made it all the more exciting, telling people when I might be on TV," she said.
"The support locally has been brilliant. I went to my local after the show and everyone was congratulating me and saying how great it was to see someone local on the show.
"The support has been amazing," she said.
Shannon sat her Leaving Cert last year and is currently studying a course in Music Performance in Coláiste an Chraoibhin in Fermoy.
Shannon's next step will be shown on Week 2 of The Voice of Ireland's battle stage, which is to be shown on RTÉ One on Sunday, February 24.
