CARLOW came away from Mullingar on Sunday with a good 22 -5 points victory in the first round of the Seconds Cup.
Number 10 Barry Purcell opened the scoring with a penalty. The out-half followed up with a breakaway try under the posts after a strong Mark Slye tackle dislodged the ball from an opposition back. The Purcell conversion gave Carlow a 10-0 lead.
Mullingar then took a tap penalty on the Carlow 22 and ran over for a soft unconverted try to make it 5-10.
On the point of half time, with a Mullingar centre sin-binned, good passing by Keating, Couchman and Kelly led to prop Larry Mcgrath grounding near the post for a converted try to leave Carlow leading 17-5 at half time.
In the second half, Carlow brought on all their subs.
Both sides missed penalties and the half remained scoreless until five minutes from time. Then JJ Waddock took another good lineout ball on the Mullingar 22. Scrumhalf Ian Pearson cut through a crowded field but was held up on the line. In the follow up ruck Wes Whitton squeezed over for the final try and for the final 22 - 5 score. Next up for Carlow is New Ross away.
