LEADING from start to finish Myshall Camogie Club won their 32nd Carlow Senior camogie club title when the defeated Naomh Brid in the final at Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday
Myshall's dominance was great in the opening minutes as they put Naomh Brid under huge pressure and they had seven wides before Catherine Foley shot the opening point in the ninth minute first of her three goals in the eleventh minute.
Naomh Brid's centre field player Emma Brennan with a well taken goal narrowed the gap to three points after 15 minutes 1-3 to 1-0
However it was from here that Myshall girls went in to overdrive with goals from Catherine Foley and Allison Ruschitzko as they led by 3-9 to 1-1 at half time.
Naomh Brid battled to get in to the game particularly Laura Regan, Sarah Foley, Emma Brennan Carmel Walsh and long serving Valerie Crean at full forward.
However their forwards came up against a stone wall Myshall defence where Emma Doyle, Joanne Joyce, Niamh Quirke at full back while Kate Nolan at centre back was in a class of her own flanked on the wings by Fiona Jordan and Mairead Doyle as they took no prisoners.
Naomh Brid upped their game for the opening 10 minutes in the last half as they held the Myshall girls without a score. But when Miriam O'Brien who had come on as a sub shot their 10th point it was a complete team effort from Myshall who were in a different class as they added a further 1-7 in the last 20 minutes.
Ciara Mullins and Tara Wilson controlled midfield. Shauna O'Rourke in goal dealt confidently with the Naomh Brid attacks. Myshall also introduced subs who shot over points the minute they arrived on the scene. Catherine Foley, captain of the side, was top scorer with 3-2. Marian Doyle was solid at centre forward flanked by Treasa O'Neill and Nuala Quirke, who was winning her 30th championship on the field of play, was joined by her two daughters, Niamh who was at full back and Ciara who was at corner forward, to make this a most unique occasion.
For a number of players on Sunday they were winning their first medal and they weren't even born when Nuala was winning her first title in 1977.
Special mention to the two young corner forwards Ciara Quirke and Ally Ruschitzko, add in Catherine Foley and the full forward line accounted for 4-8.
Niamh Curran in goal for Naomh Brid was outstanding and is one of the finest goalies in Carlow Camogie. Only for Niamh's great saves the score could have been far higher. Tracey Condell, Susan Williams Emma Brennan, veteran Valerie Crean and Carmel Walsh did their best along with the rest of the team battled to the end battled to the end.
