FITTINGLY dressed in the famous Mount Leinster Rangers colours, the Borris u-15 boys won the Leinster Community Games Indoor Soccer final on Sunday last.
Having won their semifinal 5-0 against Stradbally earlier in the day, Borris then faced Ballymahon/forgney of Longford in the final. The final proved to be a tense, tight affair, with Chris Nolan coming closest for Borris in the first half, but the sides were still locked scoreless at the break.
Paddy Malone pulled off a sharp save after the restart, but was then beaten almost immediately by Ballymahon danger man Joe Kelly. Just a minute later, Ballymahon's policy of playing it across the back rebounded on them, when Shane O'neill latched onto an interception and rifled the ball to the Ballymahon net. The rest of the second half continued in the same tight, tense manner, and extra time looked to be an inevitability. Gary Lawlor, however, had other ideas, when he strode into Ballymahon territory, and struck a blistering shot to the far corner of the net with just a minute and a half left. Borris then held on without any major scares to give themselves a two-one victory and the Leinster title. They will now play in the national Community Games finals in Athlone at the end of May.
