CARLOW RUGBY'S J1 Leinster League campaign got off to an appalling start last Sunday when they suffered a 6 to 42 point beating from visitors Longford RFC. This score line was a total contrast to the earlier Junior 2 game against Longford in which the home thrashed Longford by 6412.
Carlow J1's started brightly and were six points up after 15 minutes with two Barry Purcell penalties. However within 10 minutes Carlow leaked two tries from poor tackling and this set the pattern for the rest of the game. Longford went in 12-6 ahead at half time.
The second half was a one sided affair. Longford scored three penalties and a try before the hour mark and then ended the match with two late converted tries to give them the bonus point.
Carlow can only hope that the score was due to Longford excellence rather that their own shortcomings. Otherwise this could prove a challenging season.
Carlow's J2 side were completely on top of their Midland visitors with tries from Toby Couchman, Thomas Whitney, John Farrell, Barry Murphy, Nevin Kelly. The Whyte brothers Ritchie and John dictated the game from half back with Ritchie successfully converting most of the tries.
On the Saturday evening the Carlow Ladies side, the Coyotes, were leading 11 pts to 3 in Kilkenny when the floodlights failed after 50 minutes.
Carlow's scores came from Catriona Cassidy (try) and Ailbhe O Nolan (two penalties)
