CILL DARA CARLOW
THIS WAS anybody's game. Carlow led 15 - 7 at half time and were again camped on the Cill Dara line at the final whistle.
The pity is that if Carlow could have scored again, it would have put them into the play-offs of Section 1B of the Leinster League. It would have put them on the same points as Wicklow but with a better head to head record.
Carlow started brightly and got two well worked tries scored by Tom Mcdonagh and John Clare following breaks by Paddy Barcoe and John Joe Waddock. Barry Purcell converted a try and scored a penalty bringing the total to 15 pts. On the negative side Cill Dara were allowed slip through for a soft try from a tapped penalty.this seemed to stir Cill Dara and eventually they arose from their slumber and they then reeled off 17 unanswered points as Paddy Behan's magic feet weaved their way through for a great try, he converted this and shortly followed up with a penalty. Paddy Behan then scored an opportunist try as he intercepted and outpaced the cover, Cill Dara lead 24-15.
Carlow to their credit kept fighting for that play-off place and Purcell added two more penalties leaving it 24-21 with 10 minutes remaining, Wayne Kerr was shown the bin but Cill Dara held their line and kept Carlow out to finish their league with another victory.
Carlow will be disappointed with a loss with their season more or less over.
Cill Dara got another try against the run of play early in the second half with an intercept when it looked as if Carlow with an overlap looked good for a score. A series of penalties against Carlow lost them field position and gave another three points to Cill Dara who also slipped for another converted try.
Carlow pressure brought two more penalties but it wasn't enough to overcome the top points team in the division. Carlow Team:carlow J1. Tom Mcdonagh, John Clare, Ross Byrne, Joe Bulmer, Stuart O Malley, Paddy Barcoe, Mark Elmes, Ross Elmes, Joe Gorman, Chris Byrne, Wesley Shirley, Wes Whitton, Barry Waddock, , Larry Mcgrath, Tommy Ratihi. Carlow have ended the season in mid table. The slide from the lofty heights of Division 1 of the All-ireland League has been stopped.
