CARLOW'S MINOR camogie team advanced to a Leinster final with this win over a fancied Meath team at McGrath Park on Sunday last.
On a wet, cold day Carlow controlled the first half everywhere except on the scoreboard and had only one score, a pointed free from Kate Nolan in the 19th minute to show for their efforts.
The Carlow mentors will be worried that their team hit 10 wides in the game. This will not be good enough to win the final against Laois.
However the right tonic was given at halftime as Carlow controlled the second half and as the old saying goes 'goals win matches'. Carlow got four, two of the soft variety, and eventually won with a flattering score.
Three of the Carlow players, Kate Nolan, Ciara Quirke and Ali Ruschitzo had to play two hard games on successive days as they had fielded for Myshall in the Leinster club game on Saturday when they also contributed well.
Carlow were 0-4 to 0-1 down at halftime as Meath were the more accurate team and looked confident of winning.
Meath were first to score in the second half but it was to be their last as Carlow controlled the game. Scores from Ciara Quirke (1-2) and points from Eleanor Treacy, Shauna Barcoe and Siobhan Lawler put Carlow 1-6 to 0-5 ahead with 10 minutes to go.
A free from Kate Nolan went to the Meath net, another from play by Ciara Quirke and an opportunistic goal from Roisin Byrne put icing on the cake.
Niamh Curran was sound in goal. Carlow backs Katie O'Byrne, Rebecca O'Dwyer, Breege Nolan, Emma Doyle and Emma Kelly tried hard while Lorraine Bible and Olivia McDonald controlled midfield particularly in the second half. Subs Eimear Byrne, Roisin Byrne and Marie Doyle also made valuable contributions.
